Getting to South Africa

- By air
Johannesburg International Airport is the major airport in South Africa and is the hub for 45 airlines from all five continents.

- By sea
South Africa is becoming a popular stop on long ocean cruises but the day of scheduled mail and passenger boats is virtually over.
But not completely. There is one scheduled mail ship. The RMS St Helena, which genuinely does deliver mail – to St Helena, Ascension and sometimes Tristan da Cunha, also operates as a small cruise boat. The route includes Southampton – Ascension – St Helena – Cape Town run.

- Overland
Many people have bought a good vehicle (even a London taxi) and driven it from Europe through Africa down to Cape Town. It is by no means an easy choice but it is the adventure of a lifetime. Travelling by public transport is also a very, very Adventurous option and will certainly not be luxurious. An easier option, which is very popular with younger travelers, is to join an organized overland trip – these are big trucks usually carrying about 20 passengers.

The most usual routes are Kenya to Botswana, Kenya to Cape Town, Vic Falls to Cape Town, or – the really long one from Cairo to Cape Town.
