Gemstones with curved surfaces such as cabochons,
carvings, beads, cameos, etc. Translucent and
opaque stones are generally cut in cabochon
form, which is a dome-shaped upper surface with
a flat base. Transparent, but highly included
stones are also cut as cabochons, as it is more
cost efficient. Stones that display an optical
effect such as play of colour (opal), chatoyancy
and asterism (cat’s eye chrysoberyl and
star sapphires) are also cut as cabochons to
optimise this attractive effect. |
