 Fashioning of Gemstones

Before gemstones are fashioned, they are referred to as “rough”. Gem material is cut and polished to improve its appearance, although cutting is accompanied by a loss in weight. On the other hand, the value of a stone increases once it has been fashioned. The weight loss depends also on the nature of the rough material and the style of the stone to be cut from it.

Cutting styles may be divided into two groups:

(a)
Gemstones with curved surfaces such as cabochons, carvings, beads, cameos, etc. Translucent and opaque stones are generally cut in cabochon form, which is a dome-shaped upper surface with a flat base. Transparent, but highly included stones are also cut as cabochons, as it is more cost efficient. Stones that display an optical effect such as play of colour (opal), chatoyancy and asterism (cat’s eye chrysoberyl and star sapphires) are also cut as cabochons to optimise this attractive effect.

(b)
Gemstones with flat, polished surfaces known as faceted stones. Gemstones relying on their brilliance and transparency are faceted, i.e. cut with many plane surfaces to increase the brightness and sparkle. Both colourless and coloured transparent gemstones are faceted. Other factors to be kept in mind in the orientation of a rough stone are the shape of the rough crystal, colour zones, pleochroism and depth of colour.
