 Central Karoo

Background
The Karoo is far and away the most atmospheric of regions. This is where one goes when one needs space and silence, or to be alone, or to be alone with one's nearest and dearest. This is where one goes to recoup and take stock. No other landscape in 1he Western Cape offers as dramatic an expanse. And, as every philosopher knows: the greater the expanse, the greater the introspection. Here are kop- pies in just the right places, road signs from a bygone era and tracks undulating off into nowhere. And on the edges of these flat- lands are huge mountains dwarfed by dis- tance. The plants and vegetation, too, seem dwarfed. Succulents, vygies, spekbooms, aloes. Where some are dormant, others are flowering. Life, they say, goes on, but the plains of the Karoo go on forever. They will bring to your soul a sigh the pleasure of which it had all but forgotten.

Matjiesfontein
There's a breath of Scotland in the Great Karoo -Matjiesfontein. Steeped in its history of murder, mayhem and magic, the whole village is a national monument. General Andrew Wauchope who was killed in the Anglo Boer South Africa War is buried nearby. There is also a 4x4 route

Laingsburg
This town lies in a geologically fascinating area of the Great Karoo. Destroyed by floods a century after its establishment, the town has now been restored. Outdoor appetites can be satisfied on a variety of drives, hikes and 4x4 routes. These include the rock art route on Springfontein and a 14-km route that follows the path of the 1981 flood. Other 4x4 routes offer beautiful views and game viewing. The 19-km Elandskloof route is filled with breath- taking views of the Witteberg. A geological walk on Geelbek farm offers a glimpse of the fascinating geology of the area.

Klaarstroom
Tucked in the foothills of the Swartberg, Klaarstroom lies at the entrance to Meiringspoort-a tiny village where time has taken a breather.

Prince Albert
The architecturally well-preserved and picturesque village of Prince Albert is the gateway to the Swartberg Pass and Gamkaskloof, also known as The Hell. Attractions: Annual olive festival, magnificent views of the Swartberg Pass and its rock formations, drives, walks and visits to Gamkaskloof.

Merweville
A tiny, typical Karoo town in the middle of vast plains, Merweville is a farm holiday and hiker's paradise, and offers a variety of 4x4 routes. In this restful atmosphere your pulse will slow down to the lazy rotations of a windmill.

Beaufort West
Many unforgettable trips to the Karoo start in Beaufort West, the oldest town in the central Karoo. The town lies in a fascinating, fossil-rich area which once was a pre- historic swamp. This part of the Karoo is an eco-tourist's delight and there are many farms offering holiday opportunities, hikes, walks and 4x4 routes.

Attractions:
The Karoo National Park (only 5 km south of town) offers bird watching, a fossil walk with Braille information boards, hiking trails, and a 4x4 route. A bird hide near the camp offers excellent opportunities for viewing water birds and a wide variety of game.

Nelspoort
Only 40 km north of Beaufort West, Nelspoort was once a famous sanatorium. Attractions: The largest rock art site in the Central Karoo

Murraysburg
In the lee of the Sneeuberg Mountains lies Murraysburg, a village with wide appeal for ecotourists and birdwatchers. There are several holiday farms which also offer hunting during winter months.

Attractions:
farm holidays, 4x4 routes.
