 Karoo National Botanical Garden

The unique Karoo National Botanical Garden is the only succulent Garden known in the southern hemisphere and on the African continent. In spring, from mid-August until the end of September, thousands upon thousands of annuals and vygies come into full bloom - a sight that literally takes the breath away!

The Karoo Garden is found on the outskirts of Worcester, about 120 kilometres from Cape Town. Being in a rain shadow area, the Garden has a semidesert climate and rainfall is both low and variable, ranging from 130-200 mm of rain per year. Most of this rain falls during winter and a large percentage of the plants have adapted to grow and flower only during winter and spring.

Situated well over 1 000 kilometres south of the tropic of Capricorn, summer temperatures sometimes exceed 40 degrees Celsius. Light frost occurs in winter. The Garden originated in 1921, near the town of Matjiesfontein, on land donated by Mr J.D. Logan. Because of its relative inaccessibility, the Garden was moved 100 km to the west (with most of the original plants being transplanted) and opened in its present location in 1946.

The Garden currently receives support from the Villiersdorp and the Kirstenbosch branches of the Botanical Society of South Africa. The foothills of the Brandwacht Mountains, Beacon Hill and Hospital Hill lie in the borders of the Garden. Many variations of the “Karroid Broken Veld” vegetation type, part of the “Succulent Karoo Biome,” grow here naturally. The biome includes the Namaqualand flora, the spring flowers that bring such vigour and colour to this arid region after the first spring rains.
