| Few
sights are as awesome or a sound as deafening
as water thundering down the 60 metre Augrabies
waterfall when the Orange River is in full flood.
Called Akoerabis or “Place of the Great
Noise” by the Khoi people, this powerful
jet of water is unleashed from rocky surroundings
characterized by the 18- kilometre abyss of
the Orange River Gorge. In the stark beauty
and harsh environment of this 12 000 hectare
park, only the fittest survive whilst the quiver
trees bear silent witness. Small succulents
share the fairly inhospitable terrain with dainty
klipspringer, reptiles, fleet footed springbok
and the majestic gemsbok. With hot summers and
freezing winter nights, the best time to visit
this unique park is from March to October. |
