The 30 km Calabash
Tour offers a diversity of attractions, bringing the
visitor face-to-face with the poorest squatter area
and the elite suburbs, memorials of the political struggle
and highly active trading markets. The Shebeen Tour
takes place in the evenings and lasts four hours. Shebeens
are previously illegal drinking houses found in South
Africa and Ireland. The South African shebeens of today
are often the vibrant heart of social life in the townships.
Visits to shebeens afford visitors the opportunity to
meet and mingle with ordinary South Africans while enjoying
the best local musical entertainment. In a city with
a reputation for friendliness, the experience is all
the more rewarding.
Apart from learning so much about the people of this
area, visitors may also take comfort in the fact that
their financial contributions are making a difference
to the communities they visit.
Community partnerships have resulted in the Calabash
Educational Trust to be established which supports
local schools and the Ikaya Arts and Crafts Project,
a small gallery where local artists exhibit their
wares.
