 Pretoria National Botanical Garden

The Garden lies in a sub-tropical area and summer temperatures have often been known to reach 34o C. The annual rainfall varies but averages about 750 mm, mostly in the summer months, there being no rain at all for six to seven months of the year. The Garden opened in 1946 with 50 hectares for Garden development, 15 for buildings, nurseries and experimental areas and 10 ha for a nature reserve. Dr R A Dyer was able to obtain so much of this prime land because of the poisonous plant, Gifblaar, Dichapetalum cymosum. The Garden was the natural habitat of this plant and made the land unattractive to farmers. The intricate wrought-iron Main Gates and Reynolds Gates, designed and made by the late Hans Brugger, serve to complement the natural beauty of the Garden.

The Garden includes six main vegetation types and roughly 1 700 species of flowering plants. More than half these species grow naturally in the Garden. The rich variety is ascribed to the fact that the rocky Silverton ridge divides the Garden into Highveld and Lowveld regions. The natural vegetation common to Pretoria is ‘Bankenveld’, a mosaic of grassland and savannah, interspersed with dense bush on rocky ridges, in ravines and along streams.

Selections of Plants
Special selections of plants, which would not otherwise survive in the open, such as succulents, orchids and ferns are kept in glasshouses. The glasshouses also contain plants originating in places such as Madagascar, Namibia and Namaqualand. Visitors who wish to see the flowering stones or Lithops should make arrangements well in advance.

The seasonal display of selected spring flowers such as Namaqualand daisies and mesems and the tree wisteria avenue draw many visitors to the Garden. Sprawling green lawns and shady trees attract summer visitors and in wintertime many people come to gaze in awe at the flowering aloes. Over 185 species of birds have been recorded in the Garden and a species checklist is available at the entrance.

Most of the paths in the Garden have been paved and visitors can explore all parts of the Garden in comfort and safety. Enjoy some light refreshments at the Tea Garden that also often hosts social functions. The Tea Garden also supplies picnic baskets and picnic blankets but arrangements should be made well in advance.

The Pretoria Botanical Garden hosts music concerts on the second Sunday of every month and supplies “potjiekos”, a traditional stew prepared in a large iron pot on an open fire. Bookings for this feast should be made well in advance.

Admission
The Pretoria Garden is open all year round, from 08h00 in the morning till 18h00 in the evening. A nominal entry fee is charged, with concessions to scholars, students and pensioners.
