 Witwatersr and National Botanical Garden

Set against the majestic backdrop of high cliffs adorned by the Witpoortjie Waterfall, the Witwatersrand National Botanical Garden covers approximately 300 ha with landscaped and natural vegetation. The Garden occupies a natural hillside in the very heart of one of the most densely populated areas of the country, in the town of Roodepoort, close to Johannesburg, Soweto and Krugersdorp.Subtropical summer temperatures sometimes reach33oC but the 1 490 - 1 720 m high altitude results in cool nights and frost in winter.

The annual rainfall averages 750 mm, mainly in the summer months, with no rain for 6 - 7 months.
Established in 1982 on landgranted by Roodepoort Municipality, the Garden is funded by the Roodepoort and Krugersdorp Municipalities and by the South African Nature Fountation. The Garden receives additional support from the Bankenveld Branch of the Botanical Society of South Africa. Today, the Garden covers 225 ha of pure beauty.

The waterfall, which forms the central piece of the Garden, is 70 metres high and is on the Crocodile River, the main source of water for the Garden.

Natural Vegetation
The natural vegetation of the Garden is Rocky Highveld Grassland, a mosaic of grassland and savannah with dense bush growing in kloofs (ravines) and along streams. Over 600 naturally growing plant species have been identified in the Garden while over 180 species of birds are known to frequent the Garden. The most distinguished inhabitant of the Garden is the majestic black eagle, an endangered species.

Thirty species of reptiles and various other mammals such as buck and jackal also inhabit the Garden. Indigenous plants, trees, shrubs, groundcovers, bulbs, succulents and cycads are on sale at the Garden from 08h00 to 16h15 on weekdays and until 16h45 on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays. In winter, lunchtime concerts are held daily and environmental talks are organized monthly. Carols by candlelight is a popular event during the festive season. The best time to visit the Garden is spring and early summer, when the flowering plants sprout a splendid array of colourful buds. After the rains, the waterfall is at its most majestic, the water rushing down the slope strongly.

Before leaving, enjoy some refreshments at the restaurant that is open every day.

Admission
The main gates open at 08h00 and close at 18h00. A nominal entry fee is charged, with entrance for senior citizens being free on Tuesdays. Guided tours are conducted every Sunday, starting at 15h00 from the main entrance. Special tours can be arranged and should be booked in advance.
